Design: Spider Granma's Love Village
There is often a lot happening on the back end of the design. Like any artwork, when you spend time with an Mmmm, Yes! design, you'll see new things or make new connections. I hope when you purchase a product that you'll get many years of revelations, epiphanies and insights from the design.
Not on the top of my head while designing, but, certainly lingering in the background, is the story of Grandmother Spider who features in a the mystical chronicles of a variety of Indigenous cultures. (To call them myths, in a sense, demoted them from being legitimate spiritual mystical chronicles.)
For the Hopi and the Dine, she features in origin stories. She is one of the deities who breathed life into humans and structured civilization. In many of these spiritual inheritances, Grandmother Spider lead them on a journey through four worlds until they found the final one where they settled.
Most people are aware of her, however, due to the spiritual workings of the Ojibwe People. In those tales, Grandmother Spider - or Asibikaashi - is a helper of the people. She is the one who inspires mothers to weave dreamcatchers.
Spider Granma's Love Village arrived in a dream. But, this time, I was super conscientious and recorded the dream thoughts and images that spoke with me while I made it. This is what heard before and during the making of this design.
Come into my home Spider Grandma said to the mothers.
You whose wombs connect you to all eternity.
You who are the home of the cosmic fish
who only speak with love mouths.
You with the lightning wombs
trembling flashes of eternity.
Come see this village I have woven for you
of open door homes
where the frog agile
& star crowned bless.
There are no masks
where the Antelope Iya frolics with the lion's cubs.
Where the sky boat slips across sonorous waters.
My webs hold us in place, safely expansive.
Something that has been consistent for me in my dreaming is a future where huemyns live in a manner which is harmoniously close to the Earth, comfortable, and safe. When I visit these villages in my dreams, I always wake up hopeful and energized.
